A letter to our Sponsors:
Good Afternoon Everyone,
What happy news to bring to you from Hands Across the Sea-Haiti. On October 7, Met. Luckner Estimable, our invaluable School Director, was able to open our school Institution Mixte Karen Huxter (IMKH). On that morning, several hundred happy students arrived to begin a new year. We have attached a PDF with some photos of the first few days at IMKH. Enjoy!
As you know, with your generous gift, your sponsor child is able to receive new material for their uniforms; teachers are able to earn a fair wage; food can be purchased; and our buildings receive proper maintenance in order to keep our school safe and clean. All this is possible because of your yearly donations.
Whether you sponsor one student or several, or perhaps you are only able to manage a small amount this year, please know that your donations are absolutely necessary in order for our school to continue. We humbly ask you to give what you can, as we truly need your financial support. And if you happen to have extra to give, that would help us to cover the soaring prices for food.
In fact, we need to purchase large amounts of food so all our students can receive a hot meal daily. Our students arrive at school HUNGRY. You can imagine it is quite difficult to concentrate and absorb what is being taught with very empty tummies. This meal, for most students, will be the only food they get each day.
As many of you know, the living conditions in Haiti have deteriorated since the violent gangs have taken over the country. Yet, we are proud to report that our school is doing extremely well in spite of the gang activity that has reached the Artibonite area where our Mission is. Recently, Met Luckner received the awesome results of our school’s Grade 9 governmental exams. We are thrilled to report that 28 of our grade 9s wrote these difficult exams, and 25 of them passed. These 25 students now move on to Senior Secondary. This is a tremendous accomplishment when you consider how difficult it is in Haiti right now. Grade 13 (Filo) results also came in, and 24 out of 32 students passed, which is another awesome accomplishment.
And to top this great news, Met Luckner has been told that our school is in the category of “The Very Best Schools in the Department of Education.”
Many thanks to Met Luckner for the awesome results of these two very important governmental exams, and under his continuous strong and faithful leadership, he was able to provide so many children with an excellent education. What Met Luckner has done is especially amazing, since our school, students and teachers are faced with the daily stress of gang violence so close by.
So thank you once again for your continued financial support. Of course, if you can no longer sponsor, please send a quick email telling us this, so we can try to find help for your student elsewhere in order for them to continue with their education.
Also, please reach out to me, Beate, if you have any questions at all. I will try to find the answer as soon as I can.
