Visiting the School & Verrettes Market

Visiting the School & Verrettes Market

March 17, 2017 Posted by HATS Visitors 2 Comments

Wednesday started with another sunrise  walk ? – we are definitely getting our steps in! The views are stunning and each day brings a new route and lots to see and learn about.

The highlight of the morning for me (Ashley) was going to visit the school. Approximately 500 students attend school daily from preschool-one through to grade 12. This week kids are writing exams. I was shocked at the focus the students had even with all of the noise from the little kids being excited to see the Blans wandering around.

The younger students quickly surrounded us for hugs and to check out our soft white skin. How curious they are!

The preschool class we visited held about 40 students who were eager to say “Bonjou!” and show us their work on cursive handwriting.

After the school visit, Karen took us to the Verrettes market. We followed Karen single file and took in all the sights of daily life for the people of Haiti. We saw where they purchase everything from meat and vegetables, to homemade charcoal, and household products. Nicki, Deborah, and I were very lucky to find some beautiful mugs to bring home!

The afternoon was filled with organizing the depot with the donations that we brought down. What a blessing these donations are to the kids at HATS and to the community. We sorted clothes, sheets, towels, body products, and much more. Thank you to everyone who helped fill our suitcases!

Today (Thursday) has been filled with more painting. This time we are painting the main room of the girls home and it looks beautiful if I say so myself! We helped out with some office work and of course had time with the children riding bikes, coloring, and braiding Deborah’s hair (she may not have much hair when she comes home – ouch!).

About HATS Visitors

HATS – Haiti encourages individuals and work teams to travel to Haiti to be a part of the work we are doing. Those who come to Haiti are given the opportunity to join in construction projects, visit in the local community, spend time with the children, and minister in church. You can help us in our work for the most needy and most vulnerable members of Haiti’s population. Come be transformed by seeing the need and being a part of meeting that need. Be part of the story
