Considering a trip to HATS Haiti?

November 18, 2017 Posted by Jocelyn Pitman 5 Comments

Not sure if you want to take a trip to HATS Haiti? Here are some things to consider:

  • You get way too many hugs around here (is there even such a thing as too many hugs?)
  • The food is so good, you won’t have to worry about being hungry ?
  • You have to sleep outside every night, under the beautiful stars ✨
  • Can’t sing? No problem! If you got two hands and a heartbeat put your hands together and join in the rhythm!

  • There’s always someone to play or talk with
  • Watch out for the fake plastic spiders and cockroaches, they consistently find themselves close to you, with some giggling culprits not too far away
  • Always be on alert before walking into a room, there’s usually a little person ready to jump out and scare the daylights out of you
  • There’s good dance music playing every Thursday night, no need to go anywhere! It’s loud enough to reach you wherever you are!
  • Want to help out but not sure what your talents are? We’ve got a never ending to do list with something for everyone to do! You’ll discover all kinds of talents you never knew you had by the end of the week. Preaching, moving furniture, electrical work, plumbing, office work, etc are all part of life here at HATS.

  • If you’re always cold, Haiti is the place to be! HEAT!
  • There’s always someone around who will kill the spiders for you (or cockroaches, or snakes, or frogs, whichever freaks you out)
  • There’s no snow to shovel! Lots of other things to shovel but no snow!
  • Sounds too boring for you? Take a drive through Pont Sonde or St. Marc, you’ll have close calls every time you pass a vehicle, or person, or goat!

  • If you love animals, come to Haiti. There are a lot of horses, chickens (the roosters love to crow all night), cows, goats, donkeys, and an assortment of insects ????????
  • Please shower while you’re here, but we all smell the same after an hour, so don’t worry about it too much
  • Karen is the best storyteller around! She could write a dozen books about her experiences and we love to hear stories of her past experiences
  • Need a good laugh? Try putting a sticky frog on someone’s shoulder and see what happens
Practice your soccer and hockey skills before you come, you’ll thank me later ⚽️?

  • The blessings that you receive from going to HATS will far outweigh the blessings you think you’ll bring to the people
  • Be prepared to be a changed person when you go home, sometimes this can be hard. But it will change your life in amazing ways.
  • Some of my favorite things from my trips to HATS have been spending time with the kids, sitting in the evenings and listening to stories, and getting to experience a whole new culture and way of life.

Want to experience the trip of a lifetime? Come to HATS Haiti, you will never regret it and it will change your life forever. It is all about the children!

~Jocelyn

About Jocelyn Pitman

Jocelyn Pitman was born in a small town on the East Coast of Canada. She always had a desire to serve people and enjoyed helping in her church and at home with her family but never really looked beyond the small town of Yarmouth. In April of 2015, she traveled to HATS for the first time and fell in love with the country and people. After returning in December 2016, it was clear that God wanted her there longer than a week. After much prayer and guidance, Jocelyn returned in October 2017 to begin a six-month term. When home in Yarmouth, Jocelyn is actively involved in her church, serving on the mission’s board, and doing fundraisers for HATS.

Great Blog Jocelyn. You are so correct on so many points. I do not think it is possible to go to HATS/HAITI and not be changed. When things go wrong or you have problems when you get home they do not seem so bad. We are so blessed to live in Canada and most people do not realize it.
