This is my first trip down to Haiti and I’ve been enjoying my time very much. On the way from the airport it was a very interesting ride, it was eye opening and kind of crazy to see how other people live around the world. When we drove down the roads that had markets they all came to try and sell us things. I find it interesting to see how others make money to provide for their family. Once we got to the compound we got hugs from all the kids and felt very welcome by everyone.
Our second day we started our project; we painted the girls house in the morning and took a break after lunch because it got so hot out. After a couple of days we had all of our painting done so we decided to paint the devotion room a very pretty blue; while the rest of the team painted on Saturday I was baking cupcakes for church in the morning.
I was very surprised how cold it got during the night; we actually had to put a blanket on. Last night got so cold I was still chilly after I put blanket on. One morning I actually had my first hot shower since being here. Even walking in the morning I was still cold and I almost put a sweater on.
I’ve loved all the food we’ve had so far, the best breakfast was the baked oatmeal; it was very, very good. Some of the foods looked a bit strange but I’m happy that I tried it all because I love all of it.
Going to church was very different then home; there were mostly kids, not too many adults. I liked that they sang a lot of songs and everyone was involved, the kids did a little play and it was very cute.
I think that my favorite part of being here is meeting new people and spending time with the kids. After hearing stories about these kids from the age of 7 from my grandfather, Bob, I love that I can now put faces to those names and been able to share lots of memories with them. I would really love to come back as soon as I can and I’m really looking forward to that day, a week is not long enough.
